Rutherford, the first ApHC Executive Race Committee President, was instrumental in making Oklahoma the second-leading state for Appaloosa Racing in the United States.  He founded and

led the Oklahoma Appaloosa Racing Association and lobbied to turn Oklahoma into a pari-mutuel state.  Rutherford breed champions such as Cricket Bars, Ipana Girl, Mr. Big Horse and Ipana Maid.
