Don Marshall

Longtime Appaloosa owner Don Marshall of San Antonio, Texas, has been selected as a 2004 inductee into the Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) Hall of Fame. All inductees will be honored at the ApHC Awards Banquet held in conjunction with the National Appaloosa Show in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, July 1 – 9, 2005.

Don has actively promoted the Appaloosa breed in any way he can. Aside from serving on the board of directors for eight years — two of them as president — Don served as president of the Texas Appaloosa Horse Club from 1967 through 1969 and again from 1978 through 1981. His guidance and leadership helped make the Texas ApHC one of the largest and most successful regional clubs.

Don was active in getting Appaloosa classes accepted at the San Antonio Livestock Exposition. Other similar livestock expositions such as the National Western in Denver, Colorado; the American Royal in Kansas City, Missouri; and the Cow Palace in San Francisco, California,
followed and welcomed Appaloosa classes as well.

In addition to the business of promoting, Don had many Appaloosas and enjoyed trail riding. In 1966 he served as scout, then as chief scout, and later as trail boss of the Chief Joseph Trail Ride for five years. He also bred Appaloosas, among other breeds, and used his selling expertise at the San Antonio Appaloosa Sale. He was also a pioneer of selling Appaloosas to other countries, specifically Mexico and countries in South America.

The Texas Appaloosa Bulletin agrees that Don has been a great contributor to the breed and designated him “a foundation of the Appaloosa industry.”
