Strike’s Equal was by Commanche’s Equal and out of
Whirling Ex (JC). He was foaled in January 1963, bred by Joe Roberts
of Ada, Oklahoma; sold to Harold Stroud of Hico, Texas, and later
to Jake Snipes of Clovis, New Mexico.
The stallion won head-to-head against the big Appaloosa names
of the ’60s such as Big Buck, Cricket Bars, My Host Bright, Madame
Chic, Ocala Light, and War Don. Gold Strike’s Equal was the winner
of the 1965 World Wide Futurity; he set numerous Appaloosa world
records—his 870-yard mark set in 1966 stood unchallenged for 16
years, even against later hot hooves of Star Diver and Vandy’s
Vi.
Gold Strike’s Equal raced for six years and won 12 of 21 starts.
His lifetime earnings total $18,366. He sired 61 registered foals,
17 that went to the track and earned $23,834. His get also earned
halter awards—Striker, his first registered offspring, earned
15 grand and reserve halter titles.
He died in July 1982, 11 days before his then owner, Jake, passed
away.
